Copy my morning routine to set yourself up for the day…
Having studied top performers for over 15 years now, the one thing that comes across is that ALL elite performers have morning routines. They set their day up for success by following a set routine. This is something I’ve struggled with in the past, but I now have a routine that is really working for me. It focuses and energises me for the day. When I follow this, I feel more productive, feel less overwhelm and generally much, much more effective. I took a lot of this from Tim Ferriss (Tools of Titans). The entire routine takes about 15 minutes and I do it FIRST thing after waking. So, here goes.
Step #1. Do ten reps of something to get the blood pumping, can be squats, press ups, whatever you like. This ensures your alert.
Step #2. I make a fresh filter coffee.
Step #3 Keep a journal. I use a Moleskin Daily Diary. I journal the following:
I am grateful for 1._________2._____________3._______________
What would make my day great today would be if I achieved 1.___________2._____________3.__________
Daily affirmations. (This is where you imagine yourself having achieved the goals you want to achieve (this is proven in science to focus the brain on what needs to be done to achieve your goals)
I am enjoying (having achieved) 1.______________2._______________3.________________
I then spend 5 minutes writing out any challenges I’m facing, or habits I want to change or things I would like to improve. All it is, is me, observing myself so I am aware of what I can improve or change.
Step #4 I write out my goals for the day. I follow the #1 Thing process by Gary Keller (check out his book, The 1 Thing). This focuses you on how you will achieve your biggest goals in life, by focusing you on what you need to do today, this month, this year, to ensure you are aligned and on track to achieve them. I have created a special template in google docs for this. If you would like it, just comment in the link below.
Step#5 I have prepared a Google Slides presentation with my annual goals (personal and professional). Where possible I have put images beside my goal, as a visual representation of me in possession of my goal) I spend 2-3 minutes looking at the presentation.
This entire process takes about 15 minutes in total, but I promise you, it completely sets you up for the day.
